Agricultural extension has undergone considerable change in Australia over the past decade. New
policies are resulting in a large proportion of extension now being undertaken by the private sector
rather than traditional public sector providers. These changes are continuing and have presented the
agricultural community with certain challenges and problems.
This report identifies a number of concerns relating to the issues of where the public sector should
provide its services and what initiatives are needed to achieve more efficient and effective extension
services. It draws on experiences in New Zealand and elsewhere, thus allowing Australian agencies to
learn from the successes and failures of others.
