Antimicrobial prescribing guidelines for horses in Australia
View in Knowledge HubIn 2018 the AVA and Animal Medicines Australia (AMA) embarked upon a project to jointly oversee the development of evidence-based antimicrobial prescribing guidelines for pigs, poultry, sheep, beef cattle, dairy cattle, feedlot cattle, and horses.
The guidelines are aimed at clinical veterinary practitioners, and provide comprehensive best-practice information on common clinical syndromes in each species, including diagnostic approaches, likely pathogens, and recommended antibiotic treatments, as well as any other relevant considerations, such as non-antibiotic therapies and/or preventative management strategies to reduce the occurrence of the disease.
The pig, poultry, sheep and dairy guidelines have been completed to date, with feedlot guidelines close to completion as of January 2022. The pig guidelines were fully funded by the Department of Agriculture and Australian Pork. Subsequent guidelines have been funded by AVA and AMA, with additional industry funding from peak industry bodies.
