Summary

True Mono Floral Manuka honey in its purest form does not exist in the world market as all honey is collected from the wild or in field plantings and will always be diluted with some nectar from other species as the bees do not discriminate and forage other nectar. The ability for bees to survive and thrive in different enclosed spaces or “Greenhouses” will be tested with a view to producing monofloral honey from hives maintained within these enclosures utilising high value hybrid Manuka nectar from plants within the structures. Differing materials and environments will be explored with a view to achieving a commercially viable new high value intensive agricultural industry.

Objective Summary

1. Trial plant provided to the project from the Plant Breeding Project (PBP) which will thrive in an enclosed environment.
2. Produce the world’s first high grade mono floral Manuka honey in shade houses integrated with honeybees. Prove the commercial viability of “pure” high grade Manuka honey production in enclosed environment thereby reducing risks associated with impurities.
3. Define the factors affecting the production of high-grade Manuka honey in enclosed spaces
