  • National Priority: NEI - New and Emerging Industries - SM1

Summary

This study will facilitate a broad scan of industry opportunities with regard to global trends and local production, processing, commercialisation and trade potential. It aims to provide a series of in-depth, practical insights for the next wave of 25 industries that were not identified in the previous industry scanning report, with potential turnover of $10M or more.
This research will help inform AgriFutures Australia’s strategic investments by:
a) identifying the next wave of potential attractive, tangible opportunities for Australia’s agricultural and fisheries industries based on production systems in similar latitudes to Australia,
b) understanding the key trends and drivers in Australia for each of these opportunities, and
c) understanding the key trends and drivers in other countries, including major organisations involved, for those production systems that currently do not exist in Australia .
d) update of existing profiles to 2020 statistics.

Objective Summary

AgriFutures supported their Emerging Industries strategy with the “New Opportunities” report completed by Coriolis in 2017. This 2020 study will be an important resource to provide insights into other production systems not covered by that report, as well as production systems in other countries that are currently not found in Australia.
This project will deliver a horizon scanning study that identifies and refines a list of emerging rural industry opportunities.
Deliverables of study, include:
– Identification of new and emerging agricultural industries through a global environmental and market trends scan
– A short list of a maximum 25 priority opportunities for the next wave of Emerging Industries
– A framework for prioritising those identified opportunities
– The analysis and shortlisting of five commercial opportunities arising from the 25
priority opportunities.
Considerations in developing the list include bringing commercial insights and business-focused thinking to the challenge. The methodology should also create and deliver a clear, auditable screening methodology capable of filtering a large number of ideas and opportunities through a multi-stage screen.
