Project snapshot: Impact on honey bee biosecurity of reduced access to public lands
This project assessed the impact on honey bee biosecurity of reduced access to public land floral resources as a result of the 2019-20 Australian bushfire crisis. It investigated current biosecurity programs and practices, gaps in biosecurity coverage, beekeeper use of public lands and biosecurity risk as a result of changes in the beekeeper’s enterprise, and delivered recommendations relating to policy change, technology investment and research and development. The study found that while the impacts of loss of public land apiary resource as a result of the 2019-20 bushfire crisis were marginal at the industry level, the impacts on individual beekeepers were significant. The bushfires have contributed to overall pressure the industry is under to secure essential fodder for its livestock and maintain a healthy honey bee population for honey production and pollination purposes. Implementation of study findings may contribute to a lower endemic honey bee pest and disease load, and a more productive industry.Project summary
Project snapshot: Development of alternative Varroa treatment delivery platform
...This research investigates the potential use of organic waste as an alternative and sustainable approach to managing Varroa destructor. Current Varroa treatments rely heavily on synthetic acaricides, which not only risk contaminating honeybee products, but also face increasing resistance among mite...

International knowledge to arm beekeepers against varroa mite
A collaborative project led by The University of Sydney is preparing a locally relevant decision-support package to support beekeepers, in the event the varroa mite (Varroa destructor) establishes in Australia.Final report: Improving biosecurity resources and better understanding bee health in Australia
This project undertook activities designed to improve biosecurity resources for the honey bee industry and to provide a better understanding of honey bee health in Australia. These activities included the development of an online biosecurity course and an update to the BeeAware website to include information on the Australian Honey Bee Industry Biosecurity Code of Practice and the National Bee Biosecurity Program. This report also describes the results of an annual survey that provides a snapshot of bee health in the Australian honey bee industry, focusing on issues such as pests and diseases, colony loss and pollination services.Literature review and survey of Nosema apis in Australia

Engaging the horticulture sector with native bee pollinators
Australian native bees play an important and often undervalued role pollinating plants and crops, many of which can’t be pollinated by introduced species. Forecast increased demand for pollination services from crop industries, particularly given the establishment of the varroa mite in Australia, is likely to further stimulate the native bee industry. This anticipated growth and the environmental importance of native bees was the impetus for this project, which delivered the science of native bees and crop pollination to growers of pollinator-dependant crops. Ten face-to-face workshops were delivered to 272 growers of both emerging and levied horticultural crops in the Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales. Through lectures and live demonstrations, the workshops shared information on identification, biology and management of native bee species that are known pollinators of Australian crops. The workshops also covered ecological approaches for supporting wild and managed native bees in agricultural landscapes. The workshops built understanding and created opportunities for growers to use native bees as pollinators, leading to benefits for both the native bee industry and the emerging and levied horticultural crop industries.Final report summary: Improving biosecurity resources and better understanding bee health in Australia
