This research project developed a race-day injury reporting system for human and equine injuries that is able to support the information requirements of the racing industry. As with any surveillance system, it is built around the involvement of people – medical and veterinary staff, stewards and other racing personnel who provide the key information. Standard report forms and a proposed information pathway have also been developed. While the system is currently operational on a demonstration site, the challenge ahead is to actively implement the system within the racing industry, and to establish linkages with existing industry databases to provide maximum benefit from the data being analysed.
