DownloadMare fertility is critical to the sustainability of Australia’s $1.16 billion Thoroughbred breeding industry, yet conditions such as endometritis remain difficult and costly to diagnose using traditional methods. This project investigated the use of confocal laser endomicroscopy—an advanced imaging technology used in human medicine—to improve the accuracy and timeliness of diagnosing endometritis in mares. By developing a grading system and image atlas for veterinarians, the research demonstrates the potential for this technology to enable faster, more accurate assessment of uterine health, supporting earlier intervention and improved reproductive outcomes once the technology becomes more widely available.
