Jockey safety is a critical priority for Australia’s horse racing industry, with concussions and workplace stress posing significant risks to health, performance and long-term wellbeing. This project investigated the impacts of concussion and chronic stress on jockey decision making and reaction times, using biomarkers and advanced cognitive assessments to determine fitness to ride. The research identified more reliable tools, including virtual reality based testing, to better detect the effects of concussion and stress. These findings support improved concussion management, enhanced wellbeing support and safer riding outcomes across the industry.
