The AgriFutures Rice Program RD&E Plan 2027-32 sets a clear direction for the future of the Australian rice industry.

It supports a profitable, resilient and sustainable sector. Moreover, it invests in research, development and extension (RD&E) that delivers practical value for growers and levy payers. The Plan also helps keep rice a high-value crop within modern farming systems.

1. The Plan improves productive and efficient rice systems. It supports better agronomy, irrigation, nitrogen use and farm decision-making. As a result, growers can increase returns per megalitre and improve farm performance.

2. The Plan strengthens genetics, variety performance and product value. For example, researchers will improve yield stability, grain quality, water productivity and disease resistance. In addition, they will develop varieties suited to changing climate conditions.

3. The Plan helps growers manage climate, biosecurity and regulatory pressures. Consequently, it promotes crop protection, lower-risk production systems and responsible water use. These actions support long-term industry resilience.

4. The Plan encourages adoption, capability and coordination across the sector. Therefore, growers, advisers and researchers will work together to increase the use of new tools and practices.

By 2032, the program aims to improve water productivity, accelerate genetic gain, boost innovation and strengthen industry competitiveness.
