The Northern Territory is one of the most dynamic growth areas for Asian vegetables in Australia. The Asian vegetables industry has expanded I the NT from 30 growers producing around $2.5 million in 1995 to over 60 growers producing an estimated $12 million in 2005. Of all the supply chains for the distribution of Asian vegetables in Australia, the NT has the longest and most complex. This report offers technical guidelines for best practice for the distribution of Asian vegetables from the NT to southern States of Australia. These guidelines will assist growers, packers, consolidators, transporters and wholesalers in the supply chains.
This report provides baseline statistical information for the relatively new Asian vegetables industry in the NT. As well as indicating the high value of this ‘new and emerging industry’ in the NT, the report provides a comprehensive review of management issues for all parties in the supply chain. It will be a useful basis for those contemplating investment or formulating policy and will help to inform research and development priorities for this industry into the future.
