Through research funded from the AgriFutures Emerging Industries Program, we aim to support the long-term growth and competitive advantage of Australian insect farmers. Through targeted research and development the insect industry will exceed $10 million (GVP) by 2026.
The industry-led research, development and extension (RD&E) plan, Catalysing a $10m Australian Insect Industry outlines the three critical RD&E priorities from 2020-25. The three priorities are:

The industry-led insect RD&E plan was developed through consultation with industry stakeholders across food, feed and waste management, such as farmers, startups, investors, consultants, experts, academics, industry bodies and related industries. Consultations with select international experts have also enabled the collection of international data and examples that can inform future RD&E priorities for Australia.
We are committed to working closely with all those involved in the insect industry, as well as the AgriFutures Emerging Industries Technical Advisory Group. The Group works to identify research priorities and make investments which will have the greatest impact on the industry.

The Emerging Insect Technology Hub (EIT Hub) is a partnership between AgriFutures Australia, an Australian Commonwealth statutory Research and Development Corporation (RDC), the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), a statutory authority in the Australian Government Foreign Aid program, and the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe).
The EIT Hub aims to develop a space for collaborative networking and knowledge-sharing to deliver mutual benefits and knowledge exchange opportunities between Australian and East African industry and science partners in the area of emerging insect technologies.
Within the EIT Hub, which will be chaired and overseen by Project Manager, Mr Duncan Rowland (Australia), with Dr Chrysantus Tanga (Kenya) as secretary, a group of stakeholders will guide the strategic direction.
The main objective of the EIT Hub is to enhance the collaborative and knowledge sharing opportunities between East African and Australian industry partners on newly emerging technologies to promote black soldier fly, and other valuable insects, as a food/feed/fertiliser.
