This handbook provides a simple guide to assist in the development of a new rural industry. It draws on the outcomes of a project commissioned by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) to identify the critical success factors in new rural industries. These factors were synthesised from information obtained through meetings, interviews and surveys of a number of current and past participants in new rural industries.

The handbook includes case studies and snapshots of a number of RIRDC-supported new industries that illustrate the application of some of the principles described. Although the main emphasis of the handbook is on developing a whole new industry, the principles also apply to individual enterprises within these developing industries.
