There are approximately 50 ginger growers located in Australia’s sub-tropical and tropical production regions. Ginger production is both labour and capital intensive, and the industry faces challenges around biosecurity, pest and disease management, securing inputs such as irrigation, labour and seed, and an ageing grower base. 20% of ginger grown in Australia is sold to the processing sector and 80% is sold to the domestic fresh market.

Meet Phil Brett, AgriFutures Ginger Advisory Panel Member

Phil Brett joined the AgriFutures Ginger Advisory Panel at the beginning of 2022– and he’s full of enthusiasm for the seasons ahead. Based in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in Southeast Queensland, Phil is now in his fourth season of growing ginger after a long affiliation with horticulture.
